The challenge:
A university press is publishing a book about medieval manuscripts that includes transcriptions of hand-written marks used by scribes. About twenty of these marks don't exist in standard typefaces.
The solution:
After the text design is done and approved, BW&A works with a local typographer to create these special marks in the chosen typeface. Part of the challenge is to blend the hand-written nature of the marks with the stress and inflection of the formal typeface. Authors review several rounds of PDF proofs of the new characters. At the end of the process, BW&A has a custom-modified typeface for this specific project.
